St Michael’s Church

St Michael’s Church in Twerton is one of the oldest churches in Bath and probably the oldest building in Twerton, but its community of people is definitely not a relic of the past. It is part of a family of churches called ‘Marlbrook’. As a growing inter-generational, socially diverse community of people, they are passionate and creative, focused on serving everyone in Twerton. With a big heart for creating spaces of refuge and belonging, the vision is to see lives transformed and empowered to find security and significance. Projects include Lighthouse Cafe at Rose Cottage, Lighthouse Community Centre, and Lighthouse Chaplaincy in the local School.

First Steps

The First Steps nursery was set up by the Twerton community in 1991 to provide high quality, low cost childcare and family services to give local young children the best start in life, and has supported hundreds of children and families over the past thirty years. The pioneering group of local residents, health visitors and teachers recognised the need for high quality, flexible and affordable childcare to address barriers to employment and ensure that children had the very best start to support their learning and development.

First Steps (Bath) has grown and now supports around 500 young children, and their families, at any given time through our Twerton Community Nursery and Early Years Centre, Moorlands Community Nursery and Early Years Centre, and Bath Opportunity Pre School (BOP), supporting young children with additional needs from across Bath and North East Somerset.

Working families need access to affordable, flexible childcare so First Steps Community Nurseries offer a range of sessions, term time and all year round at an affordable price. They support families on low incomes with free meals and snacks in the nursery for their children.

Their Community Nurseries provide quality, inclusive childcare and family support to enable children to enjoy education and learning in a warm, welcoming environment and support parents back into education, training and employment.

Creative Twerton (Little Lost Robot)

Little Lost Robot offers free, creative drop-in sessions at Creative Twerton, and Creative Radstock.

Creative Twerton is a free, safe space on Twerton High Street, led by the community. Set up for adults and children to flourish and develop their creative skills, using both practical and digital mediums, all tools and materials are provided, as well as free refreshments, hot food and lots of toys.

The aim is to demystify the creative and tech industry, and give underrepresented communities the chance to gain hands-on experience of making. Disused buildings in both locations have been selected as creative hubs, giving these spaces a much-needed new lease of life.

These drop-in sessions are relaxed, fun and accessible with the aim of building confidence and developing skills.

In addition to this, more direct routes into further training, volunteering and employment are on offer. This includes Artists as Leaders training, residencies and freelance opportunities, as well as short courses for anyone who wants to continue.

See social media for latest opening days and times.
